SHARING OUR LEGACIES

AAWAA is launching the Pass It On program this coming March, featuring oral histories from the artists who laid AAWAA’s foundation, including Flo Oy Wong, Betty Kano, and more. Help us share their legacies and pass their stories on to the next generation.

REFRAMING OUR NARRATIVES

After 10 years since AAWAA mounted its first Emerging Curators Program, over a dozen fellows curated 11 different exhibitions, each highlighting socially relevant issues in their own unique way. Through mentorship and intergenerational skill-sharing, ECP has helped bring visions into reality, giving emerging art professionals the opportunity to curate their very first art exhibition.

RAISING THE PLATFORM

Creating the space for artists to express themselves unfiltered can expand the ideas of who we are and what we can achieve as Asian American and Pacific Islander women. Your support can go a long way in helping AAWAA build professional development opportunities for artists at all levels in their careers.

Watch ILLUMINATE a virtual poetry reading and open mic from this past March as part of AAWAA’s Women’s History Month events. ILLUMINATE was curated by Emerging Curators Program fellow, Lauren Ito, in response to the rise in Anti-Asian violence and hate crimes. Occurring just a few days after six Asian women were shot to death in Atlanta, over 400 people joined the livestream in solidarity of AAPI women voices.

With all of the challenges we continue to endure through the pandemic and the surge in anti-Asian hate, many are looking to AAWAA to share and listen to the stories and voices of Asian American women artists. The disproportionate violence against women in our communities shows there is much at stake in raising the platform and building the resources for our voices to be heard. We are determined to continue envisioning and striving for social justice and equity to shatter expectations of what we can achieve in the arts and beyond. We hope you’ll join us in our efforts with your contribution toward our End of Year campaign.
