Over the course of 31+ years, AAWAA went from hosting small art salons in artists’ studios to showcasing 50+ exhibitions with over 30,000 people attending our programs. AAWAA has always involved a network of persistent, powerful and thoughtful Asian American women artists and we are empowered to continue bringing visibility and recognition to their stories and legacies.

On Giving Tuesday (December 1, 2020), we achieved our $4000 matching gift challenge and reached our $10,000 end-of year goal within just 2 weeks of the campaign! Through the remainder of the month, we successfully raised over $3000 more and reached a total of $13,200+ in support of Asian American women in the arts!

Much gratitude to the abundant support of our community and to all 120 donors who contributed:

With the weight of the elections and the ongoing challenges we face, the voices and perseverance of our artists and arts community continue to shape how we come together, care and show up for each other. In 2020 alone, many of AAWAA’s members have sewn countless masks, produced numerous online readings, artist talks and performances, painted murals for Black lives and wrote hundreds of postcards to voters. Artists are at the root of resiliency in every historic moment and we are here to lift them up.

SOWING AGENCY

Opening May 2021, this exhibition will showcase art inspired by the fight for environmental justice, activating our communities to engage in the issues of today’s climate crisis.

SUPPORTING ARTISTS

Our online shop and upcoming member studio hours will create opportunities for artists to sell their work and educate folks on their artistic process; thereby, ensuring they are sustained well beyond the pandemic.

Yuri Kochiyama (May 19, 1921- June 1, 2014) began her deep involvement in social justice and human rights movements in the 1960s. She championed numerous causes including ethnic studies, Puerto Rican independence, the rights of political prisoners and nuclear disarmament. She was a supporter and friend of Malcolm X and joined his efforts as a member of the Organization of Afro-American Unity to fight for racial justice.
