Wynne Hayakawa

I grew up in California. I am third-generation Japanese immigrant on my father's side of my family. I attended the University of California at Santa Cruz, where I majored in ceramics and printmaking. I earned an MFA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. I have taught at the Hartford Art School of the University of Hartford, Ohlone College in Fremont, California, and Skyline College in San Bruno, California. I have lived and maintained a studio in San Francisco since 1988.

Statement

I am interested in the natural world, and I try to suggest natural processes while painting. Paint goes down in layers, like sedimentation. Then I let solvents erode the paint. I paint with colored gessoes and ink, then continue with layers of oil paint. I apply the paint with various kinds of brushes and putty knives, creating texture and materiality.

Color makes interval; interval creates space. Paint is air; paint is water; paint is earth. I try to maintain a consciousness of the painting surface, while making a space for the viewer to enter. We live our lives largely inside buildings, and I hope that the paintings serve as a reminder of the world outside.

My prints are an extension of my painting process. I paint with pigment and sumi on rice paper, then add drypoint and aquatint, attaching the rice paper to heavier rag paper with the chine collé technique.
